Polymer Microbead-Templated Nanostructures

چکیده
In this chapter, nanostructures templated by polymer microbead, which is usually made of polystyrene with a diameter range of 300 nm–1 μm, are reviewed. We first focus on formation of the microbead monolayer in terms of the driving force for self-assembly, the junction among the neighbouring microbeads and the uniformity of microbead monolayer. Then, we discuss applications of microbead monolayer as a template for nanostructure fabrication. Because the assembled monolayer features an ordered structure scaling up to centimetre (cm) size, microbead-templated nanostructures also show an ordered arrangement in cm size, which is attractively simple and can be achieved in common laboratories. From the microbead monolayer template, the subsequent fabrication approaches include electrochemical deposition, sputter coating deposition, plasma etching, annealing, wet etching and dry etching as well. The templating targets include metals, semiconductors, polymers, and nano-moieties such as nanobeads and nanocubes. Various types of nanostructure have been fabricated using these approaches individually or by combining them to increase the flexibility of fabrication. Controllable and ordered nanostructures have been achieved by adjusting the fabrication parameters. Finally, we review the application of nanostructures templated by the polymer microbeads, particularly as surface-enhanced Raman scattering (SERS) substrates. We demonstrate approaches for identifying the position of the hot spot and how to achieve single-molecule detection. C. Templated blue phases.
Cholesteric blue phases of a chiral liquid crystal are interesting examples of self-organised three-dimensional nanostructures formed by soft matter. Recently it was demonstrated that a polymer matrix introduced by photopolymerization inside a bulk blue phase not only stabilises the host blue phase significantly, but also serves as a template for blue phase ordering. We show with numerical mode...

A promising approach to the fabrication of materials with nanoscale features is the transfer of liquid-crystalline structure to polymers. However, this has not been achieved in systems with full three-dimensional periodicity. Here we demonstrate the fabrication of self-assembled three-dimensional nanostructures by polymer templating blue phase I, a chiral liquid crystal with cubic symmetry. Blu...

متن کاملFabrication of Defined Polydopamine Nanostructures by DNA Origami‐Templated Polymerization
A versatile, bottom-up approach allows the controlled fabrication of polydopamine (PD) nanostructures on DNA origami. PD is a biosynthetic polymer that has been investigated as an adhesive and promising surface coating material. However, the control of dopamine polymerization is challenged by the multistage-mediated reaction mechanism and diverse chemical structures in PD. DNA origami decorated...
متن کاملBiologically templated photocatalytic nanostructures for sustained light-driven water oxidation.
Over several billion years, cyanobacteria and plants have evolved highly organized photosynthetic systems to shuttle both electronic and chemical species for the efficient oxidation of water. In a similar manner to reaction centres in natural photosystems, molecular and metal oxide catalysts have been used to photochemically oxidize water. However, the various approaches involving the molecular...
